A brief annotation The series of coins “Armenian Monasteries and Churches” comprises the coins with depiction of famous monastic complexes of Armenia. The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin is a spiritual and administrative center of the Armenian Apostolic Church, the place of sacred pilgrimage of the Armenians all over the world and the Holy See of Catholicos of All Armenians. The Mother Cathedral was built in 301-303 with the assistance of King Trdat III and Gregory the Illuminator at the place where, according latter’s description, Jesus Christ descended (“Etchmiadzin” means “the descent of the only begotten” in Armenian). Sanahin - a monastic complex, an important spiritual, cultural and educational center in 10-13 centuries. In the territory of the complex there are more than 50 cross-stones representing best examples of the Armenian sculptural creativity of the Middle Ages. In 2001 the Sanahin complex was included in the UNESCO world heritage list. Noravank - a monastic complex of 13-14 centuries. The buildings are decorated with the unique sculptural patterns of gospel scenes. Noravank has several surviving cross-stones by Momik, a talented sculptor and miniaturist, all of them being considered as masterpieces. Kecharis – a monastic complex, an outstanding spiritual, cultural and educational center of medieval Armenia. There are many cross-stones of 12-13 centuries in Kecharis which make the complex look picturesque. In 2000 the Kecharis church was re-anointed to become the principal of the Kotayk diocese. Goshavank - a monastic complex, a major spiritual, cultural and educational center in 12-13 centuries. The complex has been reported in historical sources as school, university, gymnasium where numerous manuscripts were created and maintained. The name of Goshavank came in honor of an outstanding scientist, fabulist and pedagogue Mkhitar Gosh who founded the monastery in 1188. In Goshavank one can see many cross-stones, including one of the two famous embroidered cross-stones of master Poghos. Gndevank - a medieval monastic complex. The major structure of the complex, the church of St Stepanos, was built in 931-936. Painter Yeghishe the Priest decorated interior of the church with frescos which are considered as masterpieces of Armenian late medieval art. There are cross- and tomb-stones of 10th-16th centuries in the yard of the church. Many old signs have been preserved on the Gndevank walls.
