Description of obverse and reverse Obverse bears a fine effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS with the wording ‘ELIZABETH II – ISLE OF MAN 2012’. The effigy is surrounded by a mosaic pattern. Reverse features the façade of the Treasury Building in Petra which is produced in stunning high relief. At the base of the design is a rectangular insert which encapsulates sand from the site.
A brief annotation Two hundred years previously in 1812, the city of Petra was rediscovered by the Swiss explorer Johan Burckhardt. From the Greek word meaning ‘rock’, Petra is a city in Jordan that is famous for its rock cut architecture and water system. The actual Treasury façade, which has featured in many films, is 27 metres wide and 40 metres tall and the high relief of the coin shows this off to stunning effect. The extra special addition of sand collected from the site at Petra makes this coin even more unique.
