She is depicted with a scroll and stylus, and sometimes as wearing a gold crown. |
A brief annotation | Calliope is the mother of Orpheus, demigod master of poetry and the lyre. The father of Orpheus is often identified as Oeagrus, King of Thrace, but in some accounts is given as Apollo, god of light, and friend and protector of the Muses. Calliope inspired many of the great epic poems of Greek literature that told of heroic deeds and events significant to Greek culture. Calliope was the inspiration for the monumental epic poems the Iliad and the Odyssey, and was hence known as Homer’s muse. |
