The reverse design of the Ships that Changed the World – Santa Maria coin displays a representation of the Santa Maria in full sail, set against a coloured map of the world and the blue water of the high seas. The inscription "SANTA MARIA" and The Perth Mint’s "P" mintmark are also incorporated in the design. Issued as legal tender of Tuvalu.
A brief annotation The Santa Maria was the largest of three ships used by Christopher Columbus on his first voyage in 1492. In search for a quicker trade route to the East Indies from Europe, his inaugural journey resulted in him discovering the islands of the Bahamas, located off the coast of America. It was not until his third voyage that he landed on the mainland.
