The coin’s reverse also includes The Perth Mint’s "P" mintmark. Issued as Australian legal tender.
A brief annotation Australia has a proud history of exploration and scientific research in the Antarctic – the world’s highest, driest and coldest continent. To celebrate these efforts, The Perth Mint unveiled a special Australian Antarctic Territory commemorative series, with each coin honouring the famous fauna, Australian explorers and scientific observation stations. As the eighth release in the sell-out series, the 2011 Killer Whale coin celebrates this majestic and formidable creature which inhabits the icy waters surrounding the continent.
