Description of obverse and reverse Obverse: at the center, a sculptural relief of the National Shield encompassed by the legend “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS” (UNITED MEXICAN STATES). Surrounding this, following the edge of the coin frame are reproductions of the different National Shields used throughout Mexico‘s history, such as the eagle which appears in the center of the first page of the Codex Mendoza. Reverse: the nunnery, a building located in the ruins of Chichén Itzá. Its façade has masks of the rain god Chac engraved in stone.
A brief annotation The coin minted at 2011 commemorates the designation of the archaeological site of Chichén Itzá as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The structure was named “Casa de las Monjas” or nunnery by the Spanish who were reminded of convent buildings back home.
