Description of obverse and reverse | The world’s first coin to be embellished with Venetian glass, this fine silver coin features an individually placed glass ladybug of vibrant red handcrafted by a master glassmaker in Murano, Italy. The ladybug sits atop a coloured tulip adhering on the coin. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. |
A brief annotation | In 1945, in appreciation of the safe haven provided by Canada to the Dutch Royal Family after the German conquest of The Netherlands, the Netherlands sent 100,000 tulip bulbs to Ottawa. Year after year, Holland has renewed its commemorative gift to Canada, and still sends 10,000 bulbs each year. This coin celebrates this special bond by featuring the tulip and its common resident, the ladybug, which protects the tulip by consuming harmful pests. Theirs is a heart-warming kinship—much like the enduring friendship Canada shares with Holland. |
