Description of obverse and reverse | The Silver Kilo Coin has been designed by fellow Royal Academy member and internationally renowned artist, composer and writer Tom Phillips. This powerful design for the first ever UK Silver Kilo Coin of text and imagery is seen in works like his famous ongoing project, ’A Humument’. Celebrating the team endeavour of the Olympic Games, furling pennants create a kind of celebratory sun for the Summer Olympic Games, while also recollecting the Olympic Flame: “UNITE OUR DREAMS ○ TO MAKE THE WORLD ○ A TEAM OF TEAMS”. |
A brief annotation | In 2008 the Royal Mint’s Olympic Coin Programme shared its vision to create the first ever UK coin weighing one Kilogram. To do this required a change to UK Legislation, specifically an amendment to the 40-year-old 1971 Coinage Act, a clause which limited the weight to which UK coins could be made. The launch of this magnificent UK kilo coin, the first kilo coin of the realm, is the culmination of a journey which saw the introduction of this new primary legislation, itself further evidence that at the highest levels the UK not only supports the aspirations of London 2012, but is prepared to make legislative history in the process. |
