Description of obverse and reverse | For the coin about Ribera the Royal Spanish Mint used his painting “Jacob’s Dream” which tells of Jacob the Patriarch’s mysterious dream, as told Genesis. This subject demonstrates Ribera’s skill at constructing metaphoric discourse. Here, Ribera offers one of the numerous proofs of his exquisite compositional capacity, masterfully placing the foreground volumes in diagonal contraposition. |
A brief annotation | Ribera was a leading painter of the Spanish school, although his mature work was all done in Italy. He can nonetheless be qualified as a Spanish artist, however, because during the 17th century Naples, where he lived and worked for most of his life, was actually a Spanish territory; in fact, his major patrons were not Italians, but the governing Spanish class as well as Flemish merchants within the city. |
Designer | Obverse designer: Begona Castellanos; Reverse designer: Esther Gonzalez |
