A brief annotation | Common hedgehog (European hedgehog) is one of the most mysterious animals and it has been puzzling people since ancient times. Scientists debate whether a hedgehog stores food for winter and if yes – how. Immunity of hedgehogs against poison of vipers, bees and wasps, also against arsenic, opium and even hydrocyanic acid is very mysterious and incomprehensible. There is a mystery also why hedgehogs remain uninfected "feeding" every season thousands of ticks infected with encephalitis, tularemia and other infectious diseases. In Belarus, the places of their inhabitation are mainly confined to deciduous and mixed forests with undergrowth, especially to edges and clearings. |
