Description of obverse and reverse The obverse recreates the work «The Abduction of Helen», painted by Jacopo Robusti Tintoretto. This canvas is housed in the Prado Museum, in Madrid. The reverse bears a portrayal of the work titled «Moses saved from the waters» painted by Jacopo Robusti Tintoretto. This work is housed in the Prado Museum in Madrid. This is one of seven paintings from Tintoretto that were designed to be seen together, at a certain height and laid out on canvases conceived as inclined planes that converged on a central painting. Clearly, this group was intended for a profane setting. The biblical themes had lost their dramatic character and were little more than an excuse to depict exotic clothing, courtly ceremonies and nude flesh.
A brief annotation The painting on the coin reproduces Helen of Troy, daughter of Zeus and Leda, languishing in the corner of a land- sea battle scene. In classical Greece, her abduction by – or elopement with – Paris was a popular motif. In medieval illustrations, this event was frequently portrayed as a seduction, whereas in Renaissance painting it is usually depicted as a rape by Paris, Prince of Troy.
