Obverse: A portrait of former President Nelson Mandela is featured surrounded by a wreath of King Proteas, the national flower of South Africa. The year “2014” and the words “South Africa” are also depicted. Reverse: An illustration of Nelson Mandela as a child attending his first day at a village school. He is practicing writing his English name “Nelson” on a slate board. Below the child is one of his quotations: “The children of today are the leaders of tomorrow and education is a very important weapon to prepare children for their future roles as leaders of the community.” The denomination “R1” completes the design. |
| A brief annotation |
The South African Mint Company is proud to portray “The Life of a Legend: Nelson Mandela” on the legal tender Protea coin series. The 2013 edition of this series focused on Mr Mandela’s childhood. In 2014, the importance of education in his life is portrayed. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Mr Mandela wearing an iconic Madiba shirt and South Africa’s national flower, the King Protea. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a well-educated man and a great believer in education and life-long learning. He was the first member of his family to attend school, a single-room schoolhouse in the village Qunu. |

Не скучная монета в память о сильном человеке, который вдохновляет. В конкурсе есть монеты и с более сильным дизайном, но данная монета мотивирует, и потому заслуживает сравнительно высокой оценки.
