| Description of obverse and reverse | Designer Thom Puckey has opted for a simple, clean and open obverse to evoke the image of the arrival of a king: young and focused on the future with ample room to grow. The text «Willem-Alexander Koning der Nederlanden» accentuates this sentiment. The reverse reflects the rich, decorative and lavish aura of the interior and architecture of the Peace Palace: a striking blend of neo styles. The words Arbitration, Peace and Justice have been plucked from various palace titles. The depicted judges, a man and woman, emphasize the importance of justice. The «Vredespaleis Vijfje» embodies a striking contrast between the clean obverse and pictorial, spatial reverse and invites us to pause and reflect on the widely cherished dream of world peace. |
| A brief annotation | On 28 August 2013 it was exactly 100 years ago that Queen Wilhelmina opened the Peace Palace in The Hague. Since then the palace has grown as a worldwide symbol of Peace and Justice. The Hague as international city of Peace and Justice. The monumental, Neo-Renaissance style Peace Palace is home to the International Court of Justice, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the Peace Palace Library and The Hague Academy of International Law. Thousands of people work here every day in over 160 international organizations to create greater safety and justice in the world. This makes the Peace Palace the beating heart of the Hague, not only as international city of Peace and Justice but also as a centre of expertise in the Netherlands. In the future, world leaders, Legal scholars, diplomats and students will also find their way to the Hague to work towards a world of greater peace and justice. |
