A brief annotation
The reason for this coin issue was the 450th anniversary of Pieter Bruegel's death. Belgium was in 2019 with many events entirely dedicated to this special Belgian Dutch painter. The paintings of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (around 1527-1569) appeal to the imagination. Following in the footsteps of painters such as Hieronymus Bosch and under the influence of humanism and the Renaissance, Pieter Bruegel the Elder mastered a unique style of painting in which folk scenes often play an important role.

In his works he criticized society, such as the interaction between greed and pride in 'The Fight of the Moneybags and Strongboxes', oppression of the poor in 'The big fish eat the small' or several religious figures in his paintings in Hell.
