A brief annotation
Novodevichy Convent is one of the oldest convents of Russia. It was founded in the early 16th century by decree of Grand Duke of Moscow Vasili III to commemorate the return of Smolensk to Russia from under Polish-Lithuanian rule. The unique Ensemble of the Novodevichy Convent has remained intact since the end of the 17th century, has never been rebuilt or reconstructed. In 2004 it was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
