Description of obverse and reverse
The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. The entirety of the reverse is uniquely struck as a full-colour hologram, with rainbow-coloured transitional images centred atop duotone rays that radiate motion and dazzle with light. In the tradition of the artist’s K’ómoks and Kwakwaka’wakw ancestors, the centre features a stylized depiction of a beaver – a key animal in Canada’s history; also integrated into the design are representations of Canada’s four seasons: six maple leaves surround the centre, representing autumn individually while joining together to form a wintry snowflake; in-between each leaf lies a raindrop-shaped space that symbolises spring, while the rayed holographic pattern behind the central image evokes the warmth of the summer sun.
A brief annotation
This fine silver coin is the first in a three-coin hologram series that features the artwork of West Coast artist Andy Everson. In celebrating the interconnections between the natural world and Canada’s multicultural people, this coin plays on the theme of “Land” through visual storytelling, as different design elements are artfully merged so that one seamlessly blends into the next. The hologram serves as an anchor, highlighting this deep and resounding sense of connection and transition that we share with our surroundings.
