Production quality
Proof quality. Frosted and brilliant finishes. The train is reversed polished to emphasize the metallic smooth material the electric train is made of. Great care was taken to recreate the detail of the train during the 3D computer generated modeling process and then to retain the information during the manufacturing of this small coin. It is interesting to note that the design on the obverse was originally cut into the die by Kruger Gray, one of the very first die-sinkers or engravers in South Africa. In contrast to the old die engraving methods used to create the protea, the reverse was produced with modern 3D modelling computer programs and cnc machines.

Description of obverse and reverse
Obverse: The Protea flower first appeared on the 1925 three pence or tickey circulation coin. In 1961 the circulation coin series was decimalized and the protea was retained on the 2 ½ c tickey. It is from this coin that the current collector’s tickey has its classic obverse design. The year “2014” and the words ‘South Africa’ are also depicted. Reverse: The electric train or Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) Series 10M3 is featured together with the denomination “2 ½ c” and the name of the train.
A brief annotation
The “Trains of South Africa” series began in 2012 with the portrayal of the Gautrain, followed by the Diesel Electric locomotives in 2013. In 2014 the electric locomotives and trains are represented on this sterling silver coin series. Electrification of the railways in South Africa began in the 1920s with the building of the Colenso Power Station for the Glencoe to Pietermaritzburg route. The electrification plan was originally proposed in 1912, but was only implemented after World War I. October 1924 saw the first electrical train running between Daimana (Ladysmith) and Chieveley in Natal. The Cape suburban line between Cape Town station and Sea Point was electrified in 1927. The 2 1/2 c Tickey depicts the Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) Series 10M3. EMUs are an essential part of the passenger transport in the large metropolitan areas of South Africa. Designed to transport large numbers of commuters, this specific series was allocated to the Simon’s Town branch line in Cape Town.
