Description of obverse and reverse
The new Dutch euro coins bear a characteristic facial portrait of King Willem-Alexander on the national side. The choice of the portrait was based on the partitioned Dutch landscape and also symbolizes the diversity of the current population of our country. A diversity that, is united by our monarch. The lines between and around the tilted lettering refer back to the previous with the portrait with Queen Beatrix. In the design for the 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 euro cent coins, the portrait is interrupted by a mirrored text; a reference to Willem-Alexander’s specialization in water management. The facial portraits applied in the classic manner in the coin layout. This results in a contemporary series of coins that marks the beginning of a new era of monarchy.
A brief annotation
Confident, different to the last design, connected to the nature of the preceding coins. These were just a few of the principles guiding photographer Erwin Olaf in his coin design. The design had to be distinct from all other euro coins and yet sit within the range of diverse European designs. With his design, Erwin Olaf symbolizes the binding force of our monarchy and makes a strong statement about our country. His background as a photographer is also clear. This led to a modern and eye- catching coin that does justice to the Dutch tradition of design. And creates a series of coins of which we are proud.
