The Perth Mint, Australia
Description of obverse and reverse
Issued as legal tender of Tuvalu, the coin’s obverse bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, bordered by the inscriptions QUEEN ELIZABETH II, TUVALU, the 2014 year-date, the monetary denomination, and the weight and fineness of the coin. The coin’s reverse depicts a bearded Poseidon riding the waves on his chariot pulled by two hippocampi, clutching his trident, with dolphins porpoising in the background. The design also includes the inscription POSEIDON and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
A brief annotation
In ancient Greek mythology, Poseidon was worshipped as the God of the Sea. Adept at gathering clouds and creating violent storms, he was responsible for countless shipwrecks and the drowning of many souls; yet could also harness the power to grant a ship and its crew a safe journey. To showcase the depth and detail of the coin’s artistry, the release was struck in high relief to a rimless format, and finished with an antique treatment to reflect the age and strength of the theme.
