Description of obverse and reverse
In the centre of the obverse there is a stylized Vytis, the coat of arms of Lithuania, with the inscriptions LIETUVA (Lithuania), 50 LITŲ and 2012 arranged in a semi-circle.
The reverse of the coin has a stylized portrait of Maironis, an extract from Maironis’ work “Pavasario balsai” (Voices of Spring), a facsimile of his signature and the number “150”, indicating his birth anniversary.
The edge of the coin bears the inscription GINKIME KALBĄ, ŽEMĘ, JOS BŪDĄ! (Protect our language, land, traditions!)
A brief annotation
Jonas Mačiulis (Maironis) was a poet, playwright, professor of theology, history and literature, prelate, herald of Lithuania’s rebirth, national bard, and one of the most prominent figures of Lithuanian poetry. The whole epoch of poetic culture is associated with his name.
