Description of obverse and reverse
The obverse features a fossil of a dinosaur skull, together with the words ‘Rise of the Dinosaurs’, ‘South Africa’ and ‘Archosauria’. The year 2020 is written as Roman numerals.
Coelophysis rhodesiensis features as the dinosaur on the reverse of the coin, together with the denomination, the name of the coin series 'Natura' and the decription of the goup of dinosaurs, ‘Coelophysids’.
A brief annotation
Coelophysids were highly successful primitive theropod dinosaurs that occurred worldwide from the Late Triassic to Early Jurassic. Coelophysis rhodesiensis occurred in South Africa and Zimbabwe during the early part of the Jurassic period (approximately 201–199 million years ago).
Coelophysis rhodesiensis was a small, agile dinosaur which preyed on small animals, possibly even small mammals which appeared around the same time. This slenderly built, bipedal dinosaur grew up to 3 m long and weighed about 32 kg.
