The obverse and reverse of the coin are made from an abstracted shape of the sunflower.

The Erlenmeyer flask is a recognizable symbol for science. At the bottom is a small plant placed as a representation of growth and future. The Wageningen University and Research logo is placed in one of two circles. One circle passes into the other, which refers to cell division, or when you take it differently, the connection between science and economics.

The downside consists of a variation on the sunflower theme. The seeds have now become like fields or fields seen from the air. 

Wageningen University & Research was voted best Dutch university in 2017 for the 13th time in a row, according to the Keuzegids Universiteiten. Worldwide the university is in first place in the fields of agriculture, the environment, ecology and forestry.

The more than 5,500 employees and 12,000 students from more than a hundred countries work in the field of healthy food and living environment all over the world, both for governments and for businesses.

The strength of Wageningen University & Research lies in the bundling of specialized research institutes and the university in collaboration between different natural, technological and social sciences.

The colored version of this coin, is a colorful recognition of the outstanding work done by this university.
