Description of obverse and reverse
The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. The reverse features one of the most inspiring and enduring symbols of our time: Superman’s S-shield, as it appeared on the cover of The Adventures of Superman #596. Different finishes and advanced engraving techniques recreate the partially obstructed view of Clark Kent, as he rips his shirt back to reveal the emblem. Black and red colour adds texture, as does the black laser used to create shadows; with only the tie and buttons overlapping, the inner image is framed by a series of concentric circles that add motion through the illusion that the S-shield is projecting out from the coin. The overall effect is an unforgettable collectible, and a fitting portrait of strength for the iconic figure.
A brief annotation
As depicted on this coin, Superman’s S-shield has long represented universal values of strength, valour and justice; since his first appearance in 1938, millions of readers and movie-goers have been captivated by the adventures of Clark Kent and his secret identity as Superman. Buoyed by his values and beliefs, he uses his superhuman abilities for the benefit of humanity as he battles some of the greatest villains of all times. This coin is a loving tribute to a hero and all he represents; to the art that has graced the covers of famous comic books; and to fans in Canada and around the world.
