Description of obverse and reverse
The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. Combining intricate, detailed engraving with beautiful full-colour, the reverse is a timeless, heart-warming winter scene of a family skating together. Mother, father, son and daughter are warmly dressed as they skate along the pond's frozen surface with two pet dogs in tow. As large snowflakes fall, all eyes are turned on the young girl; inspired by the figure skaters she so admires, this young Canadian has gracefully raised her arms above her head to strike a pose that is reminiscent of a twirling performer – for in this brief moment, in her family’s eyes and in her own imagination, she has become the Ice Dancer.
A brief annotation
The power, grace and beauty of figure skating ignites and inspires thousands of Canadian children, who dream of twirling gracefully across the ice as the world watches in awe. This coin is remarkable in the way it captures the magic of one such skater acting out her dreams; yet it also serves as a celebration of the beauty of Canadian winters. The winter theme is strikingly enhanced by the application of full-colour in a cool colour palette, while the coin’s silver surface adds an unforgettable winter-like quality to the engraved, tree-lined residential area in the background. The coin was minted and launched in 2014 and is intended for the next year.
