Description of obverse and reverse
The obverse of the commemorative coin features a silhouette of King Willem-Alexander in a refined calligraphy style. This used to be a security measure applied to bank notes. The reverse features a similar play of lines. The lay-out of the central face value is reminiscent of the old 100 guilders note. The text “200 Jaar de Nederlandsche Bank” is engraved into the outer edge. The geometrical waves in the background symbolize the passing of time. The waves contain tiny lettering that is only visible through magnification, similar to the system used for bank notes.
A brief annotation
The Dutch Bank’s early years were made difficult by the slow acceptance of bank notes as a valid form of payment. It wasn’t until after 1850 that DNB became a true national bank, active throughout the country. During the first half of the 20th century, DNB saved our country from several financial crises. In doing so, its importance as a financial institution increased. This role was formalized after the Second World War. In 1952, it is also formally appointed banking supervisory. Later on, this task would be extended to include all Financial institutions. Nowadays, DNB also concerns itself with matters like low inflation and safe electronic payment. The Dutch Bank also holds the Dutch monopoly on issuing bank notes.
