Description of obverse and reverse
On the obverse of the coin, the design of the word “D-DAY” features both a landing craft and the cannon of a tank. The dates “1944-2014” above the tank’s cannon and the inscription “70e anniversaire du Débarquement” (“70th anniversary of the D-DAY”) are also featured. The very unique boot-prints of the American and British armies gradually disappear, washed away by a wave. A quote by Verlaine that served as a motto for the beginning of the landing is engraved on the wave: “Les sanglots longs des violons de l’automne blessent mon coeur d’une langueur monotone” (“Long sobs of the violins of autumn wound my heart with a monotonous languor”). The reverse of the coin is that of a standard ?2 coin, found throughout all countries of the eurozone. The face value “?2” appears in front of a map of Europe.
A brief annotation
The D-DAY, 6 June 1944, marked the beginning of the Allied landings in Normandy, during the Second World War. During the night of 5th to 6th of June, despite the considerable military assets deployed in place, the losses of human life would exceed 3 000 soldiers out of the 150 000 men engaged in the operation. From Saint-Martin-de-Varreville to Ouistreham, this landing marked a turning point in the balance of power held by the two sides in this major 20th -century conflict.
