Description of obverse and reverse
The obverse shows a portrait in profile of Napoleon III sporting his goatee known as “the imperial beard”, which was characteristic of his era. An imperial eagle appears on the reverse. An emblem of the First and Second Empires, the bird of Jupiter has been associated with military victories since ancient times. The time period of the reign of Napoleon III (1848 - 1871), spanning the Second Republic and the Second Empire, figures on the lower part of the coin.
A brief annotation
Christian Lacroix, the Artistic Advisor of Monnaie de Paris since 2010, continues creating the coins of this series, which started in 2011. This year is noteworthy because of the presence of three leaders who played an important role in France’s rise and influence: Louis XIV, Napoleon I and Napoleon III.
