Description of obverse and reverse
On the right side of the obverse, the back of a taxicab evokes the departure for the Battle of the Marne. A poppy and a cornflower at the bottom of the coin are the respective symbols of the Commonwealth’s and France’s veterans. On the reverse, the arrival of troops in the Marne is depicted by the front of the taxicab and marching soldiers. The year 1914 and 2014 with the inscription “Taxis de la Marne” is marked around the edge.
A brief annotation
Every region, town and family in France remembers its own experience of the First World War. To mark the centenary of the war that symbolically heralded the world’s passing into the 20th century, Monnaie de Paris is commemorating the watershed event of the last century in an original manner. The personal stories of a man at the front, a civilian serving as a nurse and a soldier on the far side of the globe fondly convey to us the everyday experiences, public and personal, of what was hoped to be the “last” Great War. 2014 is the centenary of the start of World War I. War was declared in 1914, with troops mobilized on 4th August. It was also the year of the Battle of the Marne and the famous despatch of troops by taxis. The year came to the end with the stabilization of the front.
