Description of obverse and reverse
Obverse: an image of state emblem of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the central part; face value of the coin “500” and inscription “ТЕҢГЕ” at lower sector; inscriptions “ҚАЗАҚСТАН РЕСПУБЛИКАСЫ” in state language and “РЕСПУБЛИКА КАЗАХСТАН” in Russian along the circumference; protruding edge along the circumference. Reverse: a fragment of banknote with face value of 10 tenge on which the portrait of the Kazakh educator Shokan Walikhanov is placed; inscriptions “ШОҚАН” in state language and “2014” along the circumference which means year of coinage; protruding edge along the circumference.
A brief annotation
Shokan Walikhanov (1835-1865) is a prominent scientist, enlightener and democrat, an explorer of the history and culture of Kazakhstan and Central Asia. He was an officer of the General Staff of the Russian army. For his professional services he was awarded the IV-degree Order of Saint Vladimir. His research works done after visiting Kashgaria, Semirechye, Kyrgyzia, and Eastern Turkestan bring him into line with the most famous pioneering explorers and travelers of Europe and Asia. His short life was like a shooting star on the historical sky of Kazakhstan. The portrait of Kazakh educator Shokan Walikhanov was represented on a banknote of sample of 1993 with face value of 10 tenge. The banknote is withdrawn from circulation now.
