Description of obverse and reverse
The obverse design depicts a glove that, combined with the baseball design featured on the reverse, exemplifies the most basic elements of the game of baseball, our national pastime, or just a simple game of catch in the backyard or at the local park or sandlot. The reverse depicts a baseball similar to those used in American baseball. Insets (inscriptions) on the obverse are "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "2014". Inscriptions on the reverse are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (Out of many, one) and "FIVE DOLLARS".
A brief annotation
The National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Act required the secretary of the Treasury to mint and issue gold, silver and clad coins in recognition and celebration of its 75th anniversary. Prices for the coins included surcharges authorized to be paid to the National Baseball Hall of Fame to help fund its operations, which include fostering an appreciation of the historical development of baseball and its impact on American culture. From April 11-May 11, 2013, a nationwide competition was held to determine the obverse design for the coin.
