Description of obverse and reverse
Issued as legal tender of Tuvalu, the coin’s obverse bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, bordered by the inscriptions QUEEN ELIZABETH II, TUVALU, the 2014 year-date, the monetary denomination, and the weight and fineness of the coin. The coin’s reverse features a spiral-line engraved likeness of Shakespeare above a classically struck representation of an Elizabethan theatre with an actor on stage surrounded by motifs denoting famous scenes for the artist’s acclaimed works – Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and Henry V. The inscriptions ‘William Shakespeare’ and ‘450th Anniversary of his Birth’ also appear in the design with The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
A brief annotation
Regarded as the greatest writer in the English language, William Shakespeare produced 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems and several shorter works during his career, which have been translated into every major language and performed more often than those of any other playwright. To commemorate 450 years since the birth of this prolific playwright, The Perth Mint released an innovative coin upon which a singular spiral-line was engraved to form his face above a classically struck backdrop of an Elizabethan theatre, with an actor on stage and motifs representing his most famous works.
