A brief annotation
The coin represents the Silver Coin Series – Marine Protected Areas. The South African Government has established a network of seven Marine Protected Areas within the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone. The MPA network was created to conserve South Africa’s offshore biodiversity and to ensure the sustainable use of its offshore marine resources. The coin shows a loggerhead turtle – the only member of the genus loggerhead. Due to the reduction of their number (the eggs of these turtles are considered a delicacy, before they were used in confectionery products), this species is listed in the Red Book as vulnerable.
