Issued as Australian legal tender, the obverse bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, bordered by the inscriptions «ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA», and the monetary denomination. The reverse design of the 2013 Australian Koala coin depicts an adult koala sitting on a branch of a eucalyptus tree surrounded by gum leaves. The design is headed by the inscription «AUSTRALIAN KOALA», and includes the «2013» year-date, The Perth Mint’s historic «P» mintmark, and the weight and purity of the coin.

As the issuer of the Australian Silver Bullion Coin Series, The Perth Mint has released a new design on its Australian Koala coins each year since 2008. The annual release depicts artistic representations of Australia’s most loved animal icon – the koala.
