Description of obverse and reverse
2007 - Beloved National Icon
Giving her a contemporary air yet still endowing her with those symbols long associated with Britain, Christopher Le Brun admits that he found Britannia familiar yet ‘profoundly strange and highly emotive’. He said he was pleased that her emblematic nature allowed him to ‘return to the original notion of Britannia as the Nymph of the Islands...the figure on the shore of Albion, the wooded island’. He therefore chose to show in a familiar seated pose with a watchful lion at her feet and, in the distance, a shoreline of cliffs.
Coins are dated 2012 and feature on the obverse the current portrait of Her Majesty The Queen by Ian Rank-Broadly FRBS.
A brief annotation
This unique collection celebrates the 25th anniversary of the introduction of the gold Britannia coins in 1987. It contains nine coins each bearing on the reverse one of the portraits of Britannia that has appeared on the Britannia gold and silver coins from 1987 to the present day.
