Description of obverse and reverse
Obverse: in the center - the portrait of the Queen of Great Britain Elizabeth II, along the rim – the inscriptions: on the left – “ELIZABETH II”, on the right – “COOK ISLANDS”, below – the face value "2 DOLLARS”, at the top – a hole which is surrounded by an ornament located along the rim, at the bottom – the fineness, the weight and the year of issue "2012".
Reverse: in the center - the image of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker surrounded by Jesus and the Virgin Mary, at the top - a hole which is surrounded by an ornament located along the rim; at the bottom, along the rim – a circular inscription: “СВЯТИТЕЛЮ ОТЧЕ НИКОЛАЕ, МОЛИ БОГА О НАС”.
A brief annotation
St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is a Christian saint. He is the patron saint of sailors, merchants and children. He is known for his prayers for the sailors and other travelers. In his lifetime St. Nicholas became famous as an appeaser of the conflicting parties, defender of innocent prisoners and rescuer from vain death.
In Moscow Rus’ and in the Russian Empire Nicholas was the main saint (after the Holy Mother) by the number of icons and churches named after him. Until the beginning of XX century his name was one of the most popular for baby’s appellation.
