Description of obverse and reverse
Obverse: features a 1932 portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan, restored to bring out subtle details and the beauty of the original model. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST” and “QUARTER DOLLAR”. The fineness and weight are edge-incused on the coins. Reverse: depicts a striking image of the ironclad U.S.S. Cairo on the Yazoo River as it would have been seen when it served the Union Navy during the Civil War. Inscriptions include “VICKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI, 2011” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.
A brief annotation
The Vicksburg National Military Park quarter, minted in 2011, is the 9th overall in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. The military park was established by the United States Congress in 1899 to commemorate the siege and defense of Vicksburg. The park now includes 1,325 historic monuments and markers, 144 enplaced cannons, a restored Union gunboat, and 20 miles of reconstructed trenches. The park also includes the Vicksburg National Cemetery, which was established by Congress years earlier.
