Description of obverse and reverse
Obverse: the eigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II who holds the title of Queen of Canada and is Canada’s Head of State. Reverse: the stone-encased remains of Euoplocephalus, an armadillo-like creature covered in bony armour plates, which roamed Canada’s prairies 75 million years ago.
A brief annotation
Begun in 2008, the series of $4 9999 pure silver dinosaur fossil coins has proven very popular. The Mint has devised an ingenious selective oxidation process to achieve a realistic stone effect on which the image of the fossil is engraved. This image of one of many dinosaur species found in Canada’s rich fossil deposits is sharply contrasted by a mirror-like proof field. This is an innovative and attractive way to commemorate Canada’s ancient natural history.
