Description of obverse and reverse
To celebrate the Year of the Tiger, the reverse design featured a brightly coloured image of a tiger lying on the ground, with a tree in the background. The Chinese character for “tiger” and the inscription "Year of the Tiger” also appears with The Perth Mint’s traditional “P” mintmark.
Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the obverse design bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, bordered by the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA”, the 2010 year-date, the monetary denomination, and the weight and fineness of the metal.
A brief annotation
In 2010, The Perth Mint’s internationally renowned Australian Lunar Silver Coin Series celebrated the Chinese Lunar Year of the Tiger. The coin honours the tiger, the largest of the four ‘big cats’ which has profound spiritual and cultural significance in China. People born under the tiger’s rule are considered courageous, protective and natural leaders.
