Description of obverse and reverse
Celebrating the majesty of the tiger, the coin’s reverse portrays a tiger’s head. The Chinese character for “tiger” and the inscription “Year of the Tiger” also appear in the design with The Perth Mint’s traditional “P” mintmark.
Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the obverse design bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, bordered by the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA”, the 2010 year-date, the monetary denomination, and the weight and fineness of the metal.
A brief annotation
Each year The Perth Mint’s internationally renowned Australian Lunar Gold Proof Coin Series celebrates one of the twelve animals associated with the ancient Chinese Lunar Calendar.
In 2010 the coin honoured the tiger, the largest of the four ‘big cats’ which has profound spiritual and cultural significance in China. People born under the tiger’s rule are considered courageous, protective and natural leaders.
