The obverse portrays the likeness of His Majesty King Juan Carlos. The reverse features a rendering of the Spanish Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo. To the right – the text “EXPO SHANGHAI” is inscribed in Chinese characters.

The Shanghai World Exposition was held from 1st May to 31st October 2010. The slogan chosen for the Expo was "Better city, better life". The design of the Spanish pavilion was inspired by wickerwork, a craft technique that has roots both in Spain and in China. The walk around was made up of three spaces that have been given the following captions: "From nature to city", "From the city of our fathers to the city of today", and "From the city of today to the city of our children".
