Reverse. The Perth Mint developed the innovative locket coin concept to allow free-moving objects to be showcased within a transparent capsule. To celebrate Australia’s status as one of the world’s most abundant sources of natural riches, the reverse design of Treasures of Australia – Opals portrays an abstract interpretation of Australia’s stark and beautiful landscape, with the inscription ‘TREASURES OF AUSTRALIA’ surrounding a halfcircle locket showcasing 1-carat of Australian white opals.
Obverse. Both the gold and silver coins are issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965. The identical obverse designs bear the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II”, “AUSTRALIA 2008” as the issuing country and the year-date of issue, the monetary denomination, and the weight and purity of the metal from which each coin is struck.
