Description of obverse and reverse The obverse design bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The wording "ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA", and the 2011 year-date are inscribed above the effigy, while the monetary denomination, and the weight and purity of the metal is shown below. The reverse design portrays an original Australian Aboriginal interpretation of a platypus – a special and protected animal in traditional Australian culture – surrounded by ripples of water. The design also incorporates The Perth Mint’s "P" mintmark. Issued as Australian legal tender.
A brief annotation According to Aboriginal belief, all life – human, animal, bird and fish – is part of a vast network of relationships, which can be traced back to the great spirit ancestors of the Dreamtime – the time of creation. Depicting Aboriginal artistry, the Platypus Dreaming coin is inspired by the artist’s boyhood memories of a hunting trip in the north of Western Australia. The coin pays tribute to this unique Australian creature.
