A brief annotation Vitus J. Bering (1681-1741) was a Danish naval officer in the service of the Russian Navy. He is noted for being the first European to discover Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. The Bering Strait between Siberia and Alaska is named after him. In the year 1728 and by order of Tsar Peter I. Bering first started to explore the Siberian coast in order to proof that there is no island connection between Asia and North America. In addition he explored parts of the American coast.
