Description of obverse and reverse Since its introduction by Henry VII some 500 years ago, the Sovereign has continued to be one of the most recognisable and desirable coins of the realm. Universally respected, the Sovereign came to be treasured as the foundation of a great trading Empire and, to many people, is still seen as the greatest coin in the world. This great popularity originates from its unquestionable quality and accuracy. This expression of the triumph of good over evil has, however, never been captured more succinctly and beautifully that in Benedetto Pistrucci’s dynamic portrayal which first appeared on the reverse of the sovereign almost 200 years ago. It is a design that features the legend of St George and his heroic battle with the fierce dragon which has fascinated and inspired artists and sculptors for many centuries.
A brief annotation The Royal Mint is extremely proud to reveal that the 2012 sovereign will bear a new design created to celebrate The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The 2012 Gold Proof Sovereign bears the beautifully composed image of St George and the dragon by Paul Day. This is only the fourth sovereign design change in 141 years, guaranteeing that the coins will be desirable to collectors or as the perfect gift of gold.
