Description of obverse and reverse The painting “Hercules Fighting with the Nemean Lion” is part of the series about the Labours of Hercules that executed Zurbaran for the decoration of the Hall of Kingdoms of the Buen Retiro Palace in Madrid. One of early labours that the King of Micenas, Euristeo, requested from Hercules was to exterminate a fierce lion that plagued the region of Nemea. Hercules symbolizes both the value of the hero and, with him, of the King and the monarchy, just like the triumph of Virtue over Evil and Disharmony.
A brief annotation Contemporary and friend of Velazquez, Zurbaran was a major painter of the Spanish Baroque, especially noted for religious subjects, such as monks, nuns and martyrs. Influenced in their beginnings by Caravaggio, his style was evolving to get closer to the Italian mannerist teachers.
