A brief annotation Under the common theme “Explorers”, we dedicate the eight issue in the EUROPA Programme to Spanish conquistador Francisco de Orellana. This adventurer completed the first known navigation through the length of the Amazon River. When Orellana went down the river in search of gold it was still called Rio Grande, Mar Dulce (Sweet Sea) or Rio de Canela (Cinnamon River), because of the great cinnamon trees located there. The story of the fierce ambush launched by the icamiabas Indians, that nearly destroyed the Spanish expedition, was narrated to the king, Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, who, inspired by the Greek legend of the Amazons, named the river the Amazon.
