Description of obverse and reverse It is not usual for universities to be named after the countries of their location. The special status of the University of Latvia is implicit in its very name. It is a classical university and the country’s largest educational establishment. It has managed to enhance its academic spirits and raise its intellectual potential – and today by the number of students per 10 thousand inhabitants, Latvia ranks second in the world. The obverse of the coin depicts the coat of arms of the University of Latvia. The left-hand side of the oak in the emblem is struck in relief whereas the right-hand side is a minted photo image, thus symbolizing the "dry" science versus the jolly life. The reverse features the main building of the University of Latvia in the centre, with an owl, the symbol of wisdom, sitting on books in the foreground and a rose, a dedication to the beautiful female students, behind the owl.
