Mintage | Reverse: the coin portrays several symbols of fortune and wealth, and reflects the auspiciousness of the number eight in traditional Chinese culture. The centre of the reverse design on this octagonal coin portrays a stylised combination of Chinese characters with the literal meaning “bringing money and treasures”. Other design elements include: a peony, the “flower of riches”, in colour; eight yuan bao, small ingots used in ancient China as money; and a string of eight lucky Chinese coins with square holes. Obverse: issued as legal tender of the Government of Tuvalu, the obverse design bears the Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, with the inscriptions “QUEEN ELIZABETH II”, “TUVALU” as the issuer of the coin, the year of issue, and the denomination. |
