Description of obverse and reverse The coin’s obverse features the current portrait of the Queen byIan Rank-Broadley FRBS. Reverse: Joe Whitlock Blundell has been Design and Production Director of The Folio Society for more than twenty years, responsible for all aspects of the appearance of Folio Society books. He has seen well over 1,000 different titles into print. He is also a photographer with a number of books and one-man exhibitions to his name. David Eccles is a retired illustrator and printer. Joe and David have collaborated on many projects and share an interest in the sea and sailing which helped them to formulate ideas, as Joe explains: “We discussed several ideas, involving different and sometimes quite complicated imagery: buoyage, guiding marks, vessels and lighthouses. The final inspiration of the lighthouse lamp as a beacon came about as being the simplest image, which is important on a coin, but also carrying the greatest symbolism. It suggested safety, reliability, and a continuing tradition. The ‘Trinity’ is reflected, quite literally, in the three facets of the lens. I would like people to feel that they are holding something that looks and feels like a piece of real money, that it quietly celebrates a worthy historical institution and that it is part of a continuing British heritage, solid, lasting, reliable.”
A brief annotation In 2014 Trinity House celebrates its 500th anniversary, having served the mariner faithfully since a Royal Charter was granted in 1514. Today Trinity House is the General Lighthouse Authority for England, Wales, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar. It is a Deep Sea Pilotage Authority and is the largest maritime charity in the United Kingdom, dedicated to the safety, welfare and training of working mariners and also those hundreds of thousands who sail as a pastime. To celebrate this noble organisation’s 500th anniversaryThe Royal Mint has struck the 500th Anniversary of Trinity House 2014 UK £2 Brilliant Uncirculated coin.
